The Tamil Film Producers Council organised a grand musical event on 2 and 3 February to pay tribute to legendary composer Isaignani Ilayaraja, who is often credited for introducing western musical sensibilities in the Indian mainstream music scene. The event, Ilayaraja 75, was held in Chennai. The two-day affair witnessed the presence of some of the greatest personalities from Indian film and music industries.
All roads led to Nandanam YMCA Grounds where the maestro Ilayaraja rendered a live concert to a packed audience that included the likes of industry greats like AR Rahman, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, along with dignitaries like Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, all of whom are self-professed fans. The legendary composer belted out his hits from the late 1970s and 1980s to cheers, whistles and applause as he took to his harmonium and preformed non-stop for over four hours. Ilayaraja also shared the stage with AR Rahman who admittedly is a disciple of the maestro, and together they performed his classic song ‘Mandram Vandha thendralukku’ from Mouna Raagam. A symphonic orchestra with musicians from Budapest accompanied Raja on stage. Flown specially from Hungary, they took intense training for over a month and rehearsed all songs of Ilayaraja that were to be performed on stage. They expressed their admiration at the music notations and intricate compositions of the maestro.
